How Nurses Can Administer Intravenous Infusion

HOW TO ADMINISTER AN INTRAVENOUS INFUSION

Elaborated in this page is the primary role or steps a nurse can take before and when they administer or give intravenous infusion of these liquid substances directly to the patients vein in their health care facilities is as follows:

Requirements needed on the Trolley: (The Preparatory First Step)

Top shelf of the trolley:

  1. Sterile bowl with lid containing wool swabs, gauze, sterile dressing towels/hand towel.
  2. Galipot with lid cleansing lotion e.g methylated spirit
  3. Tray containing: prescribed infusion e.g normal saline, 5% Dextrose, sterile infusion giving set
  4. Kidney dish with 5ml syringe, i.v cannulae – various sizes, scalp vein needles various sizes
  5. Kidney receiver with bandages for securing limb to splint, scissors, adhesive strapping
  6. Bottles of cleansing lotion

Bottom shelf:

  1. Salvage bowl
  2. Destructor bowl
  3. Splint

Rail of Trolley

  • Treatment plastic
  • Tourniquet

At bedside:

  • Drip stand for suspending infusion container or bottle.

 

STEPS TAKEN BY THE NURSE IN ADMINISTERING OF INTRAVENOUS INFUSION

  • Explain the procedure to client to make them comfortable
  • Wash and dry hands
  • Take trolley to client’s bedside
  • Expose the part of the limb to be used
  • Place treatment plastic in position to protect the bed
  • Hang up the infusion bottle
  • Open the lids of the sterile bowls
  • Pour out cleansing lotion
  • Open the lids of unsterile bowl
  • Cut open the bag of the infusion giving set
  • Give sterile giving set to doctor who fixes it to infusion bottle and expel air from the apparatus
  • Place tourniquet /sphygmomanometer in position to make the vein more visible
  • Assist doctor when necessary
  • Offer strapping to secure the cannula; bandage “splint” may be used to keep the cannula in position if patient is restless
  • Regulate the flow rate of the infusion
  • Make client comfortable during and after the procedure

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR SCALP VEIN

  • Tray for shaving, shave hair
  • Wash and dry head

On the Trolley

-sterile dressing towel in a bowl

– Scalp vein needles in a dish

 

METHOD OF ADMINISTRATION:

Same procedure used in intravenous infusion.
